Would you describe yourself as 'Britpop'? Neale:
No, we're not really Britpop, are we? What bands do you like? Mark:
The Smiths, R.E.M. and McCarthy. Bands that started playing jangly music
in the mid 1980's. What
is the music scene like in England? Mark: The music papers are always looking for something... a bunch of bands to label and Britpop was just another label. What
do you think of Apricot Records? How did you get to know Apricot Records? Mark:
Hanns-Christian bought a Fragile tape in the Rough Trade shop in London
and he wrote to Neale not expecting a reply but he got a reply from
Neale. I've been corresponding with Hanns-Christian from Apricot for
about a year and half via the internet, via e-mail and we talked on
the internet about what bands we liked etc. He really wanted to put
out a single by both The Shining Hour, which is mainly my own songs,
and Fragile, which is mainly Neale's songs. We play (Fragile) as a band
and we have got another two members who couldn't make it over to Germany.
We've recorded songs as Fragile with the band whereas The Shining Hour
is just me on my own. He (Hanns-Christian) really liked the stuff and
he wanted to put out a single and we said "great". We thought
it would be nice to meet because we have just written by email and we've
never seen each other before and the first time we met was today! (laughs
all around) He's a nice man! Will you come back? Mark: Yeah, we'd like to come back again with the full band. With the drummer and the bass player because on our own, with just the two of us, it's a little bit scary playing on stage and we haven't got so many people to blame when it all goes wrong! Pass Me By by Fragile is played, followed by Sitting Still by R.E.M. What an honour (for us!) Do you think that the third goal scored by England against Germany in the 1966 World Cup crossed the goal line? Mark:
No comment! (laughs all around). We'll just be diplomatic! |
